Somali is rhythmic, almost musical, but can sound harsh to outsiders. Written in Latin script now (used to be Arabic script), but pronunciation is tricky — vowels stretch, consonants bite, tone matters.

Mogadishu Somali is fast, clipped, sarcastic. Northern Somali is softer, vowels lingering. Example:
"Sidee tahay, saaxiib?"
(“How are you, friend?”)

Slang is playful, often mixed with Arabic or English. Youth say:
"Cinema tagaynaa, kadibna chill?"
(“We’ll go to the cinema, then chill?”)

Grammar is forgiving in conversation. Verb endings and tense markers exist, but locals simplify constantly. Mispronounce? They repeat slowly, sometimes over-exaggerate to make fun — mostly friendly.

Culture tip: Somalis love storytelling. Sit on the street, tea in hand, listen to local tales about politics, family drama, or camel markets — you’ll learn more phrases in one hour than a month of lessons.
