Santali isn’t like most other Indian languages you’ve probably heard. First off, it doesn’t come from Sanskrit at all, so if you know Hindi or Bengali, don’t expect shortcuts. It’s an Austroasiatic language, closer to the ones in Southeast Asia than your usual Indo-Aryan cousins.
The script, Ol Chiki, looks nothing like Devanagari or Bengali. At first glance, you might think you opened a different alphabet entirely. That said, a lot of Santali speakers also write it in Bengali or Odia scripts, depending on where they live, so texting and signs can get… confusing.
But Santali isn’t about the script; it’s about the vibe. Go to Jharkhand, Odisha, or parts of West Bengal, and you’ll hear it in markets, festivals, and even buses packed with people singing folk songs. And oh, those songs! Santali folk music is energy bottled into words — if you want to feel the language, listen to their festival beats during Sohrai or Karam.
Conversations are fast, expressive, and full of hand gestures. Santali mixes a lot of Hindi and Bengali loanwords, but when locals talk to each other, it’s like another world entirely. Don’t expect to pick it up from a textbook — you’ll need to sit with people, listen, and mimic.
Also, Santali speakers are chill. Mess up pronunciation, and someone will correct you while laughing. And then probably teach you three new words on the spot.
