Mising is one of those languages that feels like a river — it flows, bends, and carries layers of Assamese, Tibeto-Burman roots, and its own earthy tone. The first time I heard it was at a ferry ghat near Majuli Island, where two boatmen were shouting instructions. To me, it sounded like a mix of a song and a warning. Later I learned they were just arguing about who forgot the tea leaves.
Some everyday words:
“Kené?” → “How are you?”
“Moi Mising.” → “I am Mising.”
“Apun kene ase?” → A friendlier, “How’s life?”
Mising people are storytellers, but they don’t warn you before starting a story. I once asked an old man for the way to Jonai. He smiled, sat down, and started explaining how his grandfather once walked three days to fetch salt from the plains. Fifteen minutes later, I got the directions — sort of.
Food is inseparable from the language. Every conversation leads to “Apong” — a homemade rice beer brewed in every household. Don’t bother saying no; they’ll hand you a bamboo mug anyway. You’ll also hear about “Purang Apin” (rice cooked inside leaves) and “Oying” (bamboo shoots).
If you want to really learn Mising, go during the Ali-Aye-Ligang festival. It’s their New Year, but honestly, it feels like a week-long food marathon disguised as a dance festival. There’s music, drums, laughter, and random strangers will teach you five new words before you’ve even finished your first drink.
