Azerbaijani is funny because it feels familiar but not quite. Spoken in Azerbaijan, it’s a Turkic language but heavily influenced by Persian, Russian, and lately English. Baku speech is fast, slangy, sarcastic, and half the words will make you go “wait, what?”
Old-school Azerbaijani uses Cyrillic in some older texts, but Latin is standard now. Signs can still be confusing if you read old neighborhoods. My favorite moment: I tried reading a bakery menu in Baku, got completely lost, and ended up pointing at random breads while the shopkeeper laughed and gave me three free pastries.
Slang:
"Ne var ne yox, dost?"

Grammar is tricky with vowel harmony, verb conjugations, and postpositions. But honestly, people don’t talk “perfect grammar” in daily life. They jump between forms, shorten words, or drop endings entirely. Watching TV shows and YouTube vlogs is essential — that’s where you get the messy, real-life language that textbooks don’t teach.
Cultural tidbit: Azerbaijanis LOVE to exaggerate. “This tea is the best in the world” is literal, “this bread could feed the entire nation” is literal — don’t question it, just nod and eat.
